I was trying so hard to hold off on reading this Mercy Thompson because there won’t be another one until next year. Alas, I failed. And, to be completely honest, I was a little disappointed.

Tensions between the fae and humans are coming to a head. And when coyote shapeshifter Mercy and her Alpha werewolf mate, Adam, are called upon to stop a rampaging troll, they find themselves with something that could be used to make the fae back down and forestall out-and-out war: a human child stolen long ago by the fae.

Defying the most powerful werewolf in the country, the humans, and the fae, Mercy, Adam, and their pack choose to protect the boy no matter what the cost. But who will protect them from a boy who is fire.

From that description, I was thinking holy hot spot, Batman! This is going to be epic. The whole Columbia-Basin pack versus the world, rock on. Well, it was false advertising. Yes, a lot of stuff goes down, Bram disowns Adam and Mercy’s pack, the Hauptman’s adopt a fire touched boy who has been kept in Underhill for millennium, etc. But there isn’t, nor is there ever close, to being a war with Faerie. There is a hint of it, but nothing as epic as my fantasy-addled brain was expecting.

But don’t get me wrong, besides all my bitching, Fire Touched was great. Any Mercy Thompson junkies will be happy, I was just expecting more than I got.

Some things I liked about the book is that we finally, finally, get the Pack to resolve their issues that needed to be solved like, 2 books ago. I was sick of the way some members had been treating Mercy and I like that some of that issue was covered. Another is that the Hauptman’s have added another addition to their Pack, Aiden, the human fire touched boy. I cannot wait to learn more about him.

Overall, I was thrilled to have another Mercy Thompson novel in my hands. It was good but not great. I’m so excited that we have a name for the tenth installment, Silence Fallen. I’ve heard rumors that it will take Mercy to Europe!!

But for now, we wait.
