I was a little disappointed with this collection. Yes, after finishing Winter it was nice to delve back into The Lunar Chronicles but none of them really enhance the world beyond the other books. Besides The Little Android and Something Old, Something New nothing was new. None of the characters backgrounds were enhanced and we didn’t learn anything new. It was really disheartening.
But, at the same time, I loved falling right back into the world that Marissa Meyer created. It was like seeing old friends after a vacation. So, it was like a love/hate thing with this book. I was hoping for new secrets to be revealed and getting to know the characters a little more, which we do a little, but nothing than what we’d gleamed from the series.
That being said, I loved The Little Android which is a retelling of The Little Mermaid, and Cinder makes an appearance in it, but the plot does not focus on any of our main characters. Now, I’m talking the Hans Christian Andersen version of The Little Mermaid, not the red-headed girl most of us grew up with. It was heartbreaking but sweet.
Also, in Something Old, Something New I was in love with all the characters all over again. I don’t want to say or ruin anything for this story is what made the whole book worth it. Everything was pretty much implied at the very end of Winter, but it is all played out in front of you in a more beautiful way than you could’ve expected. Plus, there’s a surprised at the end that is oh, so sweet.
Overall, I liked the book, I was just expecting so much more. I think I put this book on a pedestal because I was going through withdrawals after Winter but I still enjoyed the novel. I would still recommend to any fans of The Lunar Chronicles.
